Zamalek Edge Petrol Asyut 1-0 as Awad and Fatouh Deny Late Scares

Zamalek took all three points from a tense Egyptian Premier League fixture on Tuesday, beating Petrol Asyut 1-0 at Borg El Arab Stadium in the seventh round of the campaign, according to Goal.com. Ahmed Sherif scored the only goal of the match in the 26th minute, and the visitors spent the rest of the evening protecting that single-goal cushion.

The result was rarely comfortable. Petrol Asyut pressed for a leveller throughout the second half and came close on more than one occasion, with Zamalek relying on goalkeeper Mohamed Awad and defender Ahmed Fatouh to keep the scoreline intact.

Why it matters

The three points move Zamalek to 16 from seven matches — five wins, one draw and one defeat — and keep them in third place. They sit level on points with second-placed Al Ahly, who have a game in hand having played six, and two points adrift of leaders Pyramids, who have 18 from six, per Goal.com.

For Petrol Asyut, the defeat leaves them on five points from seven games, the product of one win, two draws and four losses, and 16th in the table. A point against one of Egypt's biggest clubs would have been a notable scalp; instead they remain in the lower reaches of the standings.

The match also underlined how thin the margin can be at the top of the table. Zamalek's win was secured by a single first-half strike and preserved by two defensive interventions that Goal.com described as decisive.

Two escapes in the second half

Petrol Asyut's best chance arrived almost immediately after the interval. A cross picked out their striker, whose effort was blocked by Awad, and Fatouh then sprinted back to hack the ball off the line in the 46th minute, preventing what Goal.com called a certain equaliser.

Awad was called upon again in the 58th minute. After a misplaced pass from Mostafa El Zenari, Shi Bondi struck powerfully from inside the box, and the Zamalek keeper kept it out to safeguard his side's advantage.

Those saves framed a second half in which Zamalek, having taken the lead through Sherif's 26th-minute finish, were content to defend their advantage while Petrol Asyut pushed repeatedly for a way back into the game. The home side held firm until the final whistle.

A win built on the narrowest of margins

Goal.com framed the result as Zamalek escaping "the trap" of Petrol Asyut, and the numbers behind the scoreline support that reading: one goal scored, none conceded, and two clear chances snuffed out within the opening quarter-hour of the second half.

Sherif's strike proved enough on the night, but the contributions of Awad and Fatouh were just as important to the outcome. Without either intervention, Zamalek would have surrendered a lead they had held since the first half.

The victory keeps Zamalek within touching distance of the early pace-setters. With Al Ahly holding a game in hand on level points, and Pyramids two clear at the summit, the margin for error at the top remains small — a reality this performance made plain.

Petrol Asyut, meanwhile, will take little comfort from a spirited display that yielded no points. Their season record now reads one win, two draws and four defeats from seven outings, and they sit 16th.

What to watch next: whether Zamalek can turn narrow wins like this into more comfortable ones as the fixtures pile up, and whether Petrol Asyut can convert similar performances into points in their coming matches.
